Baroquen Pottery

I work in wheel-thrown ceramics, with a focus on functional dinnerware. My forms are influenced by what I prepare in my own kitchen: pieces that speak to comfort, generosity and abundance, meant to be used. 

Baroquen Pottery is my homage not only to my life as a violinist and violist, but my intentionally hand-crafted style. My work is a reaction against the institutional perfectionism that saturates classical music culture; an embracing of the human variance that each day brings. After working in ephemeral arts for 20 years, I now also create custom pieces to be appreciated once the music has ended.

I create in both mid-fire and high-fire clay mediums— reflective of the surroundings and communities in which I work: the Pacific Northwest Craftsman style of Whidbey Island as well as the casual modernism of Southern California. I use glazing styles meant to create movement on the form, even after it’s left the wheel. I also incorporate decals into my designs that give each piece a sense of play.
